The band known as Del Rey was conceived in October 1997 when musicians Damien Burke, Brendan Daly and Eben English voluntarily transplanted themselves from their east coast homes to Chicago, Illinois. The collaboration between these three friends grew to fruition in the Summer of 1998 with the addition of Peoria, Illinois native (and North American snare drum champion) Michael Johnson. In September of 1999 Del Rey released their first recording, "dlry," a CD-only 4 song EP on their own newly created imprint, Dirigible Recordings. "Speak It Not Aloud," Del Rey's first full-length compact disc, followed in 2001. It was recorded at Engine Studios by Jason Ward.

Del Rey's magnificent sophomore release, "Darkness & Distance" was released in October 2003 with Chris Cowgill replacing Daly. A vinyl pressing was made available as a Spanish import from the label Trece Grabaciones.

The third Del Rey epic, "A Pyramid For The Living," was released in September 2006. Drawing on diverse backgrounds of Oberlin art-rock, Peoria punk, Scottish pipe drumming, and backwoods-Maine hallucinogenica (a highly combustible mixture of narcotics and electronics), Dey Rey forge a swirling din of hypnotic rhythms, heroic riffs, and snaking, angular melodies.

"Building tension layer by layer, the percussion-driven Del Rey merges the skills of two incredible drummers with shimmering guitarwork and electronics, carving out snaking, hypnotic soundscapes with dream-like logic and nonchalant deliberation. Polyrhythms collide in precision, textures metamorphose into each other, blank minds give way to cohesive imagery - running down the middle of an empty street in a futuristic Blade Runner-like world - intense light and warmth pouring down upon the ordinarily dark and dreary." - Skyscraper

Free fact: Del Rey drummer Eben English also plays in the band L'Altra.

Yes, that was Del Rey you heard in The DC Video.
